TROMATONIC.COM'S PAT ON THE BACK AWARD A new feature on www.tromatonic.com is an irregularly presented award, to be given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to support Independent Cinema and therefore deserve a well-meant pat on the back. It is to be expected that in probably all cases this contribution has something to do with Troma, which is after all the Mother of all Independent Studio's - I doubt if without Troma and the continuous support Lloyd Kaufman gives to young filmmakers there would be much of an independent movie movement at all. (And, not to forget, this site is dedicated to Troma). The award is in low budget tradition (as I can't afford fancy silver cups or plaques - and if I could I would probably use it to throw a great Tromawareness party here in the Netherlands), but it is by no means a throwaway item: a beautiful framed and tromatonically personalised photo of Nicola Fiore (a.k.a. Super-Tromette Homophobia) wearing the world's only existing "Pat on the Back Award" Tromette-top, beautifully photographed by Jason Liquori of Hocus Focus Productions. I am in great debt to both Nicola and Jason for their kind cooperation on this. The first "Pat on the Back Award" could probably go to only one person who has not only stood behind the Grandmaster of Independent Cinema for the past 35 years, but has also made it financially possible to make the latest Tromasterpiece "Poultrygeist". Who else deserves the first edition of Tromatonic.com's Pat on the Back award than Mrs. Patricia Kaufman!!
August 2008. Dear Mrs. Kaufman, For some ten years now the work of your husband has been of great support and relief in my life – and in that period I have learned the importance of both Lloyd and his work to numerous independent filmmakers. I can only imagine even how much bleaker things would have been without his constant fight for young filmmakers. But in that period I have also learned that Lloyd could continue his crusade (and his filmmaking) very much because of the support of a wonderful family, probably in particular by you who stood behind him for 35 years and even made possible the financing of his latest masterpiece "Poultrygeist". This is why I believe that fans of great, original and intelligent films owe a great deal to you, which is why I wanted to express my appreciation with this "Pat on the Back" award. It is nothing fancy, I know, but it is sincerely from my heart. Since I launched Tromatonic.com (to try and do my two cents worth from this side of the ocean) it is the first award I ever present – actually wanting to let you know my appreciation is the reason I came up with it in the first place.
