THE WASHINGTON POST JOINED THE SAD STATE OF JOURNALISM! HELP FIGHT THIS CANCER!!
Elsewhere on this site I wrote an essay about the way the big conglomerates control what is written about their movies, and if and what is written about the competition. They simply own the media that cover the entertainment business and thus own the journalists. And so we don't read an honest and professional opinion of somebody who studied to know more about movies that most people do, but a lot of pre-fab propaganda.
As if it wasn't bad enough that "reviews" are nothing less that ingeniously fabricated promotional publications, the new methods are a lot more dangerous. To make sure nobody spends their hard-earned cash on a movie made by an independent studio the Big Guys aren't shy to publish false "reviews" by people who obviously haven't even taken the time to watch the movie they write about!!
THE WASHINGTON POST is one of these, supposedly respected, newspapers that has entered this way of maniputaling the market, by publishing something that is supposed to be a "review" of Lloyd Kaufman's latest Tromasterpiece "POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD", by supposedly respected journalist Stephen Hunter. To anyone even remotely familiar with Mr. Kaufman's film, however, it is blatantly clear Stepher Hunter did not watch the film he is writing so horribly negative about.
Read his "review" HERE and see with how many discrepancies, misquotes, false remarks and mistakes you can come up with! And then I am not even counting the insults to one of the greatest movie directors of all time AND his audience!!
LET BIG MEDIA KNOW THAT WE KNOW THEIR GAME!!" And I agree with him. If they don't find out that a lot of people are actually aware of the lies and false journalism they print, they think they can get away with it - and believe me, it will only get worse. Of course there are many people intelligent and knowledgable enough to know that what is described here cannot be an accurate review of a Troma film. But as the number of people who watch and know Troma's, Lloyd Kaufman's and other independent filmmakers's movies are still not enormous, there is a large group of people out there who would probably love these works of art, and would even probably check some titles out, that are now discouraged to do so after seeing such devastating "review" by someone who seems to be an educated journalist in what seems to be an honest newspaper. And it is important that these people too are no longer lied to, that these people too have a chance to make up their own mind.
Please check Mr. Hunter's "review" and write your findings of what is wrong with it to these addresses: letters@washpost.com yazell@washpost.com beckmanr@washpost.com
And whenever you see another example of such rediculous, lazy and criminal journalism I hope you will share it with me, so that it can be made public through this website and www.myspace.com/tromatonic so that more angry and upset people can let the magazines and/or newspapers know that just can't get away with it any longer. This scam has to be stopped!!
Thanks for supporting independent cinema, true art!!
Here is the reaction Lloyd Kaufman wrote to the Washington Post: To Whom it May Concern:
And this is what I wrote, Dear Editor, A friend of mine living in the United States sent me a copy of Stephen Hunter's review of "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead", from july 18th. And although I live in the Netherlands I cannot be anything else than absolutely disappointed in the American Media if this review is representative. It is so obvious that Mr. Hunter DID NOT SEE THE FILM he reviewd! I have seen it several times, and it is obvious that everything in his "review" that has actually to do with the film itself in INACCURATE!!! Even if he would have been attentding the showing in a theatre but kept himself busy with other things he could not have made such enormous mistakes in his writing, and such obvious misquotes. Nor could he possibly know what he is talking about, as the things he says Mr. kaufman is making a "parody" of miss the target completely. It is disappointing to see that respected newspapers in a respected country are so careless when they write about a unique work of art you should be proud of. And not only does he insult one of the best movie directors your country has, he also is the cause of probably thousands of people who now will miss out on a movie they would have liked! If I were you I would check on the whereabouts of Mr. Hunter when he says he will be watching a movie to review - it is obvious he has other matters on hand. In name of all serious filmfans around the world I ask you to have the film reviewd by someone who actually cares about his subject. Yours sincerely, etc, etc.....
